SnorkackCatcher's Stories
snorkfics
Hi there! snorkfics is the archive journal for stories written by me, snorkackcatcher, and associated meta. Currently almost all of them are fanfics, and most of those are for Harry Potter, although there are a few Whoniverse fics and even fewer original pieces.

This contains the 'current' version of each story (incorporating any updates to the originally posted version, e.g. those that beta readers or reviewers have suggested), together with some notes on the background to the story. I'm not as prolific as I was a few years ago, but I do still write -- in fact, it seems that on the whole I write fewer but longer stories.

There's a list of summaries and site postings under the cut (not always up to date, I'm afraid -- the posts themselves are the best guide). HP stories are tagged with an image of a (UK) book cover to show which version of canon they are compatible with (about half of them were written between Half-Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows, but the majority of those are in line with the latter book):

Deathly HallowsHalf-Blood PrinceOrder of the Phoenix

Title: Automatic Reactions
Rating: PG-13
Length: 500 words
Fandom: Harry Potter
Challenge: One prompt, many writers challenge
First posted: 30th March 2013, in melusinahp

Summary: "To burn with desire and keep quiet about it is the greatest punishment we can bring on ourselves."― Federico García Lorca, Blood Wedding and Yerma

Notes:
The idea of this challenge (run by melusinahp, any pairing or none) was that everybody participating wrote a ficlet to the same prompt -- the one above -- with a contest afterwards to guess who wrote what. Congratulations to writcraft who made the only correct guess on this one, even though I tried to adopt a different style. :)

It is enoughCollapse )

Title: The Sacrifice of Right
Rating: PG-13
Length: 14,500 words, this part 7,850
Fandom: Harry Potter
Challenge: Harry Potter Holiday Genfic Exchange 2012
First posted: 24th December 2012, in hp_holidaygen

Summary: When Minerva McGonagall discovers a cryptic note among Dumbledore's old papers, she finds herself investigating a mystery involving goblins, ancient runes, and Beedle the Bard, with the invaluable assistance of Percy Weasley.

Notes:
Written for an original request by minnabird that included Minerva McGonagall and Percy Weasley among the requested characters, although in a way you get two stories for the price of one. :) Makes use of bits of secondary canon from Pottermore, but no prior knowledge of them is required to understand the story.

For the avoidance of confusion: a 'CV' (curriculum vitae) in British usage is the same as a 'resumé' in US usage -- a list of accomplishments submitted in support of a job application.

Title: Need to Know
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 5,500
Fandom: James Bond (Movies)
Challenge: Yuletide 2011
First posted: 23rd December 2011, in the Yuletide 2011 collection at AO3

Summary: Even a 00 agent isn't told all the things MI5 has up its sleeve. Of course, things can get interesting when they find out anyway.

Notes: Written for greenbirds. Setting for the record: post-Cold War, say early/mid 1990s, although I was picturing Sean Connery and the rest of the original cast in the roles when I wrote it. Somewhat AU, but then changes and retcons are hardly unknown in the canon anyway. :)

Rating: PG-13
Length: 8,600 words
Fandom: Harry Potter
Challenge: Harry Potter Holiday Genfic Exchange 2011
First posted: 20th December 2011, in hp_holidaygen

Summary: "Don't believe a word of it! Not a word, Harry! Let nothing tarnish your memories of Albus Dumbledore!" Our own weaknesses are always those we criticise most harshly in others.

Notes:
Written for an original request that included Doge among the requested characters. One short direct quote from Deathly Hallows.

Summary: After the war, Draco runs into an old friend. At least, he had been one, once.

Notes:
Written for chaoschild92, who requested Draco and Blaise after or during the war, and gave me a chance to write characters I don't normally. Thanks to lyras for looking over the story and making some helpful suggestions.

Title: Teamwork
Rating: PG-13
Length: 2,750 words approx
Fandom: Psmith (P.G.Wodehouse)
Pairings: Background Psmith/Eve
Challenge: Yuletide 2010
First posted: 19th December 2010, in Yuletide 2010

Summary: Psmith is engaged to fight a breach of promise case, but sometimes even a man of his talents needs a bit of help.

Notes: Written for chaletian. Wodehouse suggested that Psmith did not spend all that long as Lord Emsworth's secretary, but instead returned to the Bar and became a highly successful barrister. I'm happy to go along with that! This story is set in his very early days in the Law.

It's rather tell-y and was originally meant to be significantly longer and much more show-y -- I posted this shortened version to meet the initial deadline, intending to post the extended version before the archive opened for viewing. Unfortunately I was only half-way through that when hit by a couple of illnesses, and so never did in the end. I really need to finish it off sometime!

As for chronology -- I'm kind of assuming from the internals that the action of Leave it to Psmith follows the others much more closely than the publication dates do (1908-10 and 1923). Let's say this one is set in about 1912 (hence the references to the Tsar and the Black Hand).

A reputation is a practical necessity for the poor barrister just beginning to ply his tradeCollapse )

Title: Among My Souvenirs
Rating: PG-13
Length: 2,000 words approx
Pairings: Andromeda/Ted, a bit of Teddy/Victoire
Challenge: Femgenficathon 2010
First posted: 15th August 2010, in femgenficathon

Summary: Andromeda preserves that which is precious to her in a manner that only a witch can.

Notes: The prompt (kinda sorta used, in a way, but not as much as I thought it would be) was: We can never go back again, that much is certain. The past is still too close to us. The things we have tried to forget and put behind us would stir again, and that sense of fear, of furtive unrest...might in some manner unforeseen become a living companion, as it had before. --Daphne Du Maurier (1907-1989), English author, biographer and playwright.

Something of a change of style for me, hopefully. Thanks to lazy_neutrino for the beta. A few further notes at the end.

Rating: G
Length: 1,100 words approx
First posted: 31st July 2010, in expresszine (printed versions were available at Crucio 2010 on 2nd-4th July)

Summary: The inside story on the Chudley Cannons latest signing!

Notes: Short piece written for The Hogwarts Express fanzine, downloadable as a PDF from that link. Based on one of those ideas I'd had at the back of my mind for some time ("so why couldn't a Muggle play Quidditch, then?") but never found an occasion to use before.

The world of Quidditch has been agogCollapse )

Pairings: A bit of Ron/Hermione
Challenge: springtime_gen 2010
First posted: 19th May 2010, in springtime_gen

Summary: Some business offers are just too good to be true. That's why Aurors Potter and Weasley are on the case. Although cases don't always go the way an Auror expects them to ...

Notes: Written for fpb's request. Hopefully fully canon compatible and reasonably plotty even if it's not entirely serious. :) Split into two parts here to allow for some notes at the end.

Challenge: Remix ... Redux 8: Magic Eight Ball

Notes: A remix of Sugar, Sugar by livii. Thanks to meddow for betaing.

Title: Starting Over
Rating: PG-13
Length: 5,100 words approx
Fandom: The Sarah Jane Adventures (with Doctor Who references)
Challenge: Femgenficathon 2009
First posted: 16th October 2009, in femgenficathon

Summary: Moving to America was supposed to mark the end of Maria's alien-investigating activities. But that's not the sort of thing it's easy to forget. And sometimes it seems as if the universe so arranges itself that things just happen to some people ...

Notes: In the SJA canon timeline, takes place shortly after Mark of the Berserker. Written for prompt #61: "Invest in the human soul. Who knows, it might be a diamond in the rough. -- Mary McLeod Bethune (1875-1955), American educator and civil rights activist; founder, in 1904, of a school for black girls which eventually became Bethune-Cookman University, a black university in Daytona Beach, Florida; and advisor to Franklin Delano Roosevelt." Sort of used in the development of one character, but not the main theme.

Title: The One, Even If Not Only
Rating: PG-13
Length: 1,500 words
Fandom: Torchwood
Pairings: Jack/Ianto
Challenge: Remix Redux 2009
First posted: 12th July 2009, in remixredux09

Summary: As Ianto danced with Jack at the wedding, he knew that whatever happened, when he was with the man he loved he didn't regret a thing.

Notes: A remix of the fic Five 'dances' that Jack never had, and one that he did by ceindreadh, originally posted under the unwieldy title Five 'dances' that Jack never had, and one that he did (The One, Even If Not Only Remix). Thanks to such_heights for looking at this and pointing out some problems.

Refers indirectly to elements of The Dead Line and Children of Earth, but no plot spoilers. Also draws on an 'email from the team logs' in the Series 2 website supporting material.

Title: Where My Thought's Escaping (part 1 of 3)
Rating: PG-13
Length: Total 20,000 words approx, this part 6,800
Pairings: Some Cho/Michael
Challenge: springtime_gen 2009
First posted: 15th May 2009, in springtime_gen

Summary: Cho had enjoyed her visits to Guangzhou. She wasn't at all sure she wanted to live there. But when her parents moved their family away because of the war, she found herself trying to build a new life in China -- and struggling to reconcile it with her unfinished business in Britain.

Notes: The original request was from odds_are_evie, who listed Cho among her five characters. Thanks to kennahijja for regular betaing, plus shiiki and dolorous_ett for invaluable Sinopicking assistance. But anything problematic is my responsibility, not theirs.

A few small changes have been made to cover what looked, on reflection, like small plot holes. Split into three parts here (rather than the two of the original comm) to allow space for the usual 'DVD commentary' notes at the end.

Su Li is a Ravenclaw in JKR's notebook list of 40 students in Harry's year, although she never appeared in the books. She may in fact have been the prototype for Cho herself, but here I've followed fandom tradition by taking the notebook literally. The mention of Cho's Scottish accent is a nod to Katie Leung, of course, though there's nothing in the books to say she doesn't have one. One line is taken directly from DH, others refer to it from Cho's POV. The title is from Simon & Garfunkel's Homeward Bound. It was chosen post-completion when I decided my working title didn't cut it, but when I checked the lyrics they did seem to fit the general mood.

Title: A Law of the Medes and Persians
Rating: PG-13
Length: Total 30,600 words; this part 7,600
Pairings: Harry/Ginny, a little Ron/Hermione
First posted: 21st September 2008, at PhoenixSong.net

Summary: Harry would have liked a little peace and quiet after the Battle of Hogwarts to decide what he wanted to do next (although rebuilding his relationship with Ginny was definitely high on the list). But any such hopes were dashed by unexpected threats to his godson and to Kingsley's position as Minister, and once again, he and his friends found themselves in a courtroom taking on an old enemy ...

Notes: In four parts -- more detailed notes at the end. Harry POV but something of an ensemble cast, especially Ron, Hermione, and Ginny. Many thanks to ladybug at Phoenix Song and to under_crisis here on LJ for their betaing -- especially because both spotted potential plot holes in time for me to lay a plank over them. :)

It also placed in the 2009 Hourglass Awards!

Title: Solving the Clues
Rating: PG-13
Length: 8,550 words
First posted: 24th July 2008, in omniocular

Summary: Kingsley Shacklebolt had never expected his habit of solving the Daily Prophet crosswords to uncover a security leak. But when the Potterwatch passwords started to appear in them as answers to clues, he had little choice but to investigate who was behind it ...

Notes: Thanks to lls_mutant for some very helpful beta suggestions. Any remaining glitches are my fault.

Translated into Russian by lady_nym here.

Title: In The Bleak Midwinter
Rating: R (just about)
Length: 9,350 words
Pairings: Ron/Hermione
Challenge: Ron/Hermione Colorful Winter Quote!fic Challenge
First posted: 21st January 2008, at Checkmated

Summary: Hermione Granger had grown to dread the winter. The season almost seemed to have a grudge against her. So as she and Ron flew from summer in Britain to winter in Australia to search for her parents, she had both old and new issues to resolve.

Notes: Written for the prompt: "Love is an irresistible desire to be irresistibly desired." (Robert Frost), which had to be incorporated as a line of dialogue, plus the colour "cerise" which had to be used in an 'obvious way'. Thanks to muggle_prof for checking it over and prompting some changes, and for ladybug for betaing it for Phoenix Song and suggesting a better last line.

Title: Catching Wild Geese
Rating: PG-13
Length: 1,400 words approx
Fandom: Torchwood/Doctor Who
First posted: 9th January 2008, in snorkackcatcher

Summary: A peeved Torchwood team return to base to find out exactly why Jack sent them on (what seemed like) a wild-goose chase.

Notes: Originally written to pick up on an idea suggested by a throwaway line in Last of the Time Lords, before the second series of Torchwood started and made the idea impossible. As it was, it mostly survived -- in the original version of this Jack returned to the Hub immediately after leaving the Doctor and Martha. This is a tweaked version to allow for the fact that he didn't, and to take into account as much of the website supporting material as was possible without contradicting the basic premise of the fic (come on, it's not like said material is 100% consistent with the TV canon anyway).

Title: Nymphadora Tonks and the Liquor of Jacmel
Rating: PG-13
Length: 275,000 words approx
Pairings: Various, mostly OC/OC (some Tonks/OCC)
First posted: From 10th September 2004, Chamber of Secrets Forums
Version 2 posted from 6th March 2007 at Checkmated

Summary: It's never plain sailing for a newly-qualified Auror, and especially not for Nymphadora Tonks. Her Metamorphmagus talents are a big career advantage. Her dark wizard relatives certainly aren't. Being thrown in at the deep end on her first case doesn't make things any easier, either. So when Tonks puts her shapeshifting skills to good use investigating the trade in a highly dangerous potion, while simultaneously trying to deal with her family's very 'Black' past history, things quickly get complicated ...

Notes: The story posted here is 'Version 2.0' as revised for Checkmated (betaed by shiiki) and elsewhere. Brief notes on the changes and background below the cut. Almost DH-compatible but with a few small discrepancies.

Title: Twenty Shipping Drabbles
Rating: G to R
Word count: 2,000 words, of course. :)
Pairings: Wait and see!
Challenge: Inspired by The Great Harry Potter Drabble Challenge
First posted: 16th July 2007, in hp_rarepairs

Summary: Twenty unrelated drabbles about some rather rare pairings.

Notes: Inspired by metafrantic's aforementioned comm and my earlier Twenty Sibling Drabbles collection from almost exactly a year ago. The protagonists aren't named as a challenge to the reader, but hopefully it should be possible to work out the POVs and settings! (There's a list at the end for reference.) Het, slash, femmeslash, interspecies -- oh, and crack. Much crack. One or two are perhaps a trifle sneaky, but ...

Title: Unmarked
Rating: R
Length: Total 14,340 words; this part 4,780
Pairings: Lucius/Marcus Flint, some Lucius/Narcissa
Challenge: 2006 FictionAlley Park Valentine's Day Challenge
First posted: 10th July 2007, in hp_rarepairs
(first part posted in draft form 14th February 2006, at FictionAlley Park)

Summary: Participation in the game of power has left Lucius Malfoy with many marks. Marcus Flint has none, and Lucius finds this appealing. But there are many complications in the course of their six year relationship ...

Notes: Originally begun for the second FAP OTP Challenge in 2006 -- it had the same rules as the first, you get two random characters and a random connector to make a sentence, and have to write a story which incorporates that sentence. This time the sentence was "Lucius Malfoy has the hots for Marcus Flint" -- I didn't get the fic completed in time for Valentine's Day 2006, and so just posted the first part. I've worked on the rest off and on between other projects -- what should have been a simple slashfic turned into a 14K-word monster, so it's presented here in three parts!

Many thanks to kennahijja for her detailed beta notes.

Title: Desperate Measures
Rating: PG-13
Length: 3,400 words
Challenge: Who, What, When, Where Genfic Challenge
First posted: 20th June 2007, at Checkmated

Summary: The Trio resort to kidnapping. And they rope Neville in to help. But sometimes desperate times call for desperate measures, which may be understandable when the reasons are known ...

Notes: Written for the prompt set Harry, Neville, Petrificus Totalus, Boxing Day, St Mungo's (all prompts chosen had to play significant parts in the fic).

Harry concentrated on the incantation for the Body-Bind as hard as he possibly couldCollapse )

Title: The Lonely Sea and the Sky
Rating: G
Length: 5,800 words
Challenge: springtime_gen 2007
First posted: 8th April 2007, in springtime_gen

Summary: "The first ever Atlantic broom crossing [was] by Jocunda Sykes in 1935" (Kennilworthy Whisp, Quidditch Through The Ages). Jocunda tells the story in her own words.

Notes: Originally written for molly_coddles who requested 'humor or fluff'.. Many thanks to gloryforever for the original beta.

Title: That's What Friends Are For
Rating: PG
Length: 2,200 words
Challenge: Harry Potter Holiday Genfic Exchange 2006
First posted: 28th December 2006, in hp_holidaygen

Summary: Cho runs into an old friend and comes to an understanding.

Notes: A short pinch-hit for hp_holidaygen: the request was "Fluff, humor, character studies. I'd love to see some more Ravenclaw fic/art, nothing too dark and angsty; a little dramatic tension is good". After a little brainstorming, that gave me the opportunity to write a friendship fic with a couple of characters I have an odd soft spot for. :)

Title: Battles with Basilisks
Rating: PG-13
Length: 6,000 words
Challenge: AU Extravaganza Challenge
First posted: 27th December 2006, in omniocular

Summary: AU: Harry and Ron visit the Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor's office to tell him where the Chamber of Secrets is. Everything Gilderoy Lockhart writes about himself ... is actually true.

Notes: Assumes events happened exactly the way they did in CoS up to the point where Harry and Ron arrive at Lockhart's office. Contains a number of lines from canon that have been blatantly ripped off cunningly alluded to. Thanks to lazy_neutrino for the initial beta!

A nice bright green cover with a snake motif and a big photo of me on the front, looking handsome and dashing, of course ...Collapse )

Title: Preventive Medicine
Rating: R
Length: 1,300 words
Pairings: Some Stebbins/Fawcett (kind of)
First posted: 15th November 2006, in snorkackcatcher

Summary: Two students visit Madam Pomfrey with an embarrassing problem. The cure may possibly be worse than the disease.

Notes: A short piece vaguely inspired by some forum thread or other -- at the Sugar Quill, I think -- and which seemed to more-or-less write itself. Setting -- round about the start of the school year in OotP. Should probably be avoided by Snapefen of this particular ilk

During the course of a long career at Hogwarts, Poppy Pomfrey had grown used to students calling on her for help with strange ailmentsCollapse )
